Argentina’s senior men’s basketball team is currently ranked first in the world by FIBA. In the inaugural FIBA World Championship tournament in 1950 Argentina took home the gold medal. Although since then, it was not until the year 2000 would Argentina see its team rise back to prominence in the basketball world. Argentina placed second in the 2002 FIBA World Championship tournament, its highest finish since the 1950 tournament. In 2004 the Argentines became the first country to win the Olympic gold in men’s basketball in the 2004 Olymipi since the US began using its NBA players in 1992. Along with a third place finish in the 2008 Olympic games, Argentina has solidified itself as a top tier basketball team in international play. Numerous NBA players have come out of Argentina since then including Carlos Delfino, Luis Scola, Fabricio Oberto, Andres Nocioni, and Manu Ginobili.
