The cha cha originated from the Mambo, another dance of Cuba. Cha Cha is similar to the mambo but with a different, faster rhythm. It was previously known as the triple mambo because of the two slow steps followed by three quick steps but eventually progressed into its own dance. In the early 1950’s it adopted the name Cha Cha and became very popular. Dancers keep their feet close to the ground at all times, their weight foreward and use intense hip movements, while performing this dance. The cha cha is also danced on the off beat instead of the traditional down beat.
