Coffee in Colombia

Coffee was first introduced to Colombia in the early 1800's. Throughout the 20th century, coffee has been the main export for Colombia. Over 12% of the world's coffee market is produced by Colombia, followed only by Brazil. The harvesters pick the coffee berries individually from the plant and pack them in fique sacks,then carry the fruits on their backs, or with help of pack animals, to the depulping machine. The pulp is used as compost, and the coffee beans are fermented in containers for 24 hours to enhance their quality. Colombia is the third largest producer of exported coffee beans in the world. Similar to Costa Rica, many Colombians do not regularly drink coffee, and the coffee in local circulation is of much less quality than that of export quality. In Colombia, they call coffee tinto.

The Juan Valdez logo was created by Doyle Dane Bernbach in March 1959. It includes the character Juan Valdez, his mule Conchita, and the Colombian mountains in the background. It identifies coffee products made with 100% Colombian coffee that are approved by the National Federation of Coffee Growers. Many coffee drinkers recognize this logo as a seal of "good coffee" and the logo has a huge recognition rate and popularity. Home
